Drywall Finishing & Taping in Rock Hill, SC

Level 4 and Level 5 finishes by tapers who do this every day.

Drywall finishing is where every other trade's mistakes get covered and every drywaller's skill gets exposed. A perfect frame, a perfect hang, and a perfect joint compound system mean nothing if the tape job leaves visible seams under raking light. Rock Hill Drywall Pros runs a dedicated finishing crew — three full-time tapers whose entire job is delivering Level 4 and Level 5 finishes on residential and commercial work across York County.

Understanding finish levels (and what you actually need)

The Gypsum Association defines six finish levels, 0 through 5. Most Rock Hill homeowners only need to know three of them. Level 3 — one coat over tape and fasteners — is appropriate for garages, utility rooms, and unfinished spaces where heavy texture will be applied. Level 4 — three coats, sanded smooth — is the residential standard for any wall that will receive flat or eggshell paint. Level 5 — Level 4 plus a thin skim coat across the entire surface — is the high-end finish for gloss paints, critical lighting, and dark colors.

Every quote we provide specifies the finish level included. We will recommend Level 5 when your project genuinely needs it (south-facing rooms with large windows, dramatic accent walls, semi-gloss kitchens) and we will tell you when Level 4 is the right answer and you should not pay for the upgrade.

Our taping process — what makes a great finish

Step one: prefill butt joints and any gaps with setting-type compound for structural strength. Step two: embed paper tape (preferred over mesh on flats) in a thin coat of all-purpose mud, working bubbles out with a 6-inch knife. Step three: fasteners and inside corners get one coat of mud. Overnight cure.

Step four: a wider 10-inch knife brings a second coat over flats and butts, feathered well past the seam. Inside corners get the second corner coat. Step five (third coat): a 14-inch trowel finishes flats and butt joints, feathered out to 18+ inches total width. Light sanding between coats; final sand to a glass-smooth surface ready for primer.

When Level 5 is worth the upgrade

Level 5 is a meaningful upgrade in cost and time — but it eliminates the visible difference between paper-faced drywall (slightly matte) and joint compound (slightly polished) that shows under raking light or high-gloss paint. We strongly recommend Level 5 in these conditions: rooms with large south- or west-facing windows that wash walls with raking light, ceilings under critical light fixtures, walls receiving gloss or semi-gloss paint, walls receiving dark deep paint colors, and any wall in a high-end finished space.

Level 5 is not worth the cost in low-light rooms with standard flat paint, basements and garages, or walls that will be heavily textured. We will tell you up front.

Re-taping failed joints and seams

Many Rock Hill homes built during the rapid Charlotte metro growth of the last fifteen years have telegraphing seams — straight shadow lines visible under raking light from the original tape job that was rushed or done with the wrong compound. We re-tape failed seams individually or full rooms, removing the original tape if needed, retaping properly, and refinishing with three coats. The result is invisible.

Spray-applied Level 5 for large projects

On large commercial and high-end residential projects, we spray-apply the Level 5 skim coat with an airless sprayer and back-roll, then dry-sand with vacuum equipment. This is dramatically faster than hand-troweling and delivers a more consistent finish on large continuous surfaces. We use this on projects over 5,000 square feet of wall area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Level 4 and Level 5 drywall finish?

Level 4 is three coats of joint compound over taped joints and fasteners, sanded smooth — the residential standard. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the entire wall surface, eliminating the texture difference between paper and mud. Level 5 is recommended for gloss paints, critical lighting, and dark colors.

Do you tape and finish drywall hung by another contractor?

Yes. We routinely take over finishing work from other contractors, particularly on owner-built projects or when the original drywaller did not include taping. We will walk the job first and flag any hang issues that need correction before finishing begins.

How long does the finishing process take?

A standard 2,000 square foot home takes our finish crew about three to four working days from first tape coat to final sand, with overnight cure between mud coats. Level 5 adds one to two additional days.

Can you re-tape seams that are showing on an existing wall?

Yes. Telegraphing seams from failed prior tape jobs are repaired by removing the old tape, retaping with paper tape and proper setting compound, and feathering three new coats. The result is invisible under raking light.

Do you use mesh tape or paper tape?

Paper tape on flats and inside corners — it is stronger, less prone to cracking, and used on every job. We use mesh tape only on small repair patches where speed is critical and where it is fully embedded in setting-type compound.
